Blue Beanie Day 2011: Three Cheers for Web Standards

Administrator's picture

Way back in 2003, Jeffrey Zeldman wrote the seminal “Designing with Web Standards”, a book that among other things, encouraged developers not to write code for specific browsers, rather code against web standards that will work in any browser that has implemented the standards. That’s the something the Internet Explorer team fundamentally agrees with – writing code once and serving that same markup across browsers.

I have to admit that I’m interested in shopping and have spent a lot of my life in malls, department stores, boutiques and my computer looking for the best deals, the hottest shoes (hello, hello 5” stilettos) and gifts for my huge family (all 8 of us…). So, I was super excited when the opportunity came up to work with Microsoft Store on a Tech Tuesday Live Twitter Chat. If you haven’t been to one of the stores, let me tell you they are awesome. There is tons of cool gear, giant screens that surround the entire store and really smart, friendly reps.

It’s been one week since a few of us from the Internet Explorer team were down in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2011. When customers sit down to browse the web, they have more choice than ever about the browser they’ll use. Here in the Internet Explorer team, we look at usage share as one of several results that come from developers targeting, partners supporting, and customer preferring the latest version of Internet Explorer. Last month we saw some encouraging news about browser preference.

Ryan mentioned in his opening blog post that you’ll be hearing from lots of people who work on or around Internet Explorer– both people who work at Microsoft as well as our partners. I wanted to quickly jump on the blog and introduce myself. My name is James Pratt and I’ll be both contributing posts to the blog as well as working behind the scenes with other authors on their content.

Protecting Windows customers is an absolute priority for the Internet Explorer engineering team.  That's why we work hard to make sure our browser has some of the best safety and privacy features available today.  We've spent a lot of time talking about some of the more visible safety and privacy features like our SmartScreen Filter, that protects users from socially engineered malware and phishing attacks; or the InPrivate features that put you in control of how you share your information.
